This course introduces students to selected writers and works of English poetry, prose, and drama from the Middle Ages to the 20th Century, focusing on themes of place and identity. Students will learn how to engage in literary and textual criticism while developing their writing skills. In the first semester, we will examine early medieval works from Britain and work our way through to the 18th Century. All of the texts we will look at can be found in The Norton Anthology of English Literature (9th Edition). The second semester will also make use of The Norton Anthology and will cover texts from the 19th and 20th centuries. We will also read Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre.
