This course aims to provide students with an understanding of works of the English Romantic period. Most of our attention will be on the study of the poetry and non-fiction prose by the six major poets of this period (Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, and Keats), but we will also examine the poetry of women poets of this period, as well as novels by Austen, the Bronte sisters, and Mary Shelley and to essays by Wollstonecraft, Lamb, Hazlitt, and De Quincey.

Particular emphasis will be placed on situating these works within their socio-political, cultural, and historical contexts. Students will also be encouraged to consider a variety of critical and interpretative points of view.
